'We'll catch our flight as long as we leave soon.'
A melhor forma para perceber quando usar as long as e unless é vermos os seguintes exemplos.
As long as
Como vamos ver nas seguintes frases, podemos alterar if por as long as e o significado será o mesmo:
- I will go if it is free. = I will go as long as it is free
- You can borrow my bike if you are careful. = You can borrow my bike as long as you are careful.
- You will pass the test if you study hard. = You will pass the test as long as you study hard.
Unless
Se as frases estiverem na negativa, usa-se unless para manter o mesmo significado. Unless significa "except it" ou "only if". Vamos ver os exemplos:
- If it isn't free, I won't go. = Unless it is free, I won't go.
- If it doesn't rain, I'll walk to town. = I'll walk to town unless it rains.
- If we don't leave now, we'll be late. = Unless we leave now, we’ll be late.
- Only if you have a ticket, can you enter. = You can't enter unless you have a ticket.
